CHOCOBO DIGGING

Wark, wark, giddyup!

Many rare items sleep in the soils of Vana'diel. With some gysahl greens in your inventory and a chocobo mount at your disposal, these treasures can be pillaged for your pockets. Be warned though, digging is not for the impatient!

Preparing for a dig doesn't take much. Grab several stacks of gysahl greens from your nearest stables vendor and rent a bird. If you can ride a chocobo in a zone, you can dig in it too, just select yourself to open your actions menu and choose the dig option, or make a /dig macro if you prefer. Every time you select dig, a gysahl green will be consumed from your inventory and the chocobo will attempt to dig an item. If you want to maximize riding time, a set of chocobo riding gear is a worthy investment, with each +1 from the gear adding 1 minute to your riding time. However, this gear will not increase your dig success.

Get used to seeing a lot of failed dig attempts. The amount of items you dig up is highly dependant on a hidden skill level that ranges from 0 to 10, with all new diggers starting at level 0. Reaching the coveted level 10 is a feat very few have accomplished, taking years even for the dedicated digger. After zoning, measuring the amount of time required to pass before you are allowed to dig will let you determine what skill level you are, as seen in the following chart−−

Waiting Times by Skill Level
 level between digs after zone
 Lv.00 15 seconds 60 seconds
 Lv.01 10 seconds 55 seconds
 Lv.02 5 seconds 50 seconds
 Lv.03 0 seconds 45 seconds
 Lv.04 0 seconds 40 seconds
 Lv.05 0 seconds 35 seconds
 Lv.06 0 seconds 30 seconds
 Lv.07 0 seconds 25 seconds
 Lv.08 0 seconds 20 seconds
 Lv.09 0 seconds 15 seconds
 Lv.10 0 seconds 10 seconds
Note that a waiting time between digs will be imposed in the early levels. The wait time after zoning is always present, but becomes drastically reduced in the higher skill levels. Use this to keep a record of your current level, because you'll receive no message of your level increases. Be sure to recheck it, as your game clock can make the number vary by a few seconds. Leveling up is simply a matter of patience. It doesn't matter where you dig, if you're obtaining some items, rest assured they will all count toward an eventual level up.

If you find yourself depleting a whole stack of gysahl greens with no items to show for it, try changing zones. Each zone has a limited number of items to be discovered in a given time, and it doesn't take very long for a single digger to unearth all of them. A zone that has been dug up will slowly replenish the items over a period of time, with items of poor value taking as low as several minutes to be restored, while some very rare items may take over half an hour.

Below you will find charts of possible item acquisition by zone, along with the rarity of each item. Be aware that while technically there is no set skill level requirement to obtain a rare item, the chances of doing so in early levels are almost nonexistent. The higher your skill level, the better your chance will be of obtaining something rare, and more frequently as well. In addition to the items by region charts below, there are also special items that can only be obtained during the right conditions. These items are−−

  • Crystals, only obtainable when a weather effect is present in the zone.

  • Crystal Clusters, obtainable when a double weather effect is present.

  • Elemental Ores, obtainable when a weather effect is present AND the moon phase is waxing crescent. Ore obtained will be the element of the day of the week, for example Earth Ore on Earthsday.
Even when these conditions are met, Elemental Ores are still incredibly tough to dig up. Aim for waxing crescent 7-24% and don't expect to have a realistic chance of obtaining one until around skill level 7 or higher. Also be aware that these ores cannot be obtained in Yuhtunga Jungle and Yhoator Jungle, or East Altepa and West Altepa. Other items effected by special conditions include any kind of seed, which can only be dug up at night, and mushrooms, which can be found any time but more frequently during rainy weather.

The July 2006 update introduced 'fatigue' to chocobo digging, causing items to become unobtainable after an extended period of digging. After you have reached this point, you cannot obtain further items until the following day, after midnight in Japan has passed. If you are getting successful digs, roughly 20 stacks of gysahl greens can be consumed before you will become fatigued.
