Xbox 360 price drop official, Wednesday
arly evidence in flyers last week for an Xbox 360 price drop has proven authentic. Microsoft has today announced nationwide price cuts for all three editions of its console, ready to go into effect on store shelves tomorrow. The 50 dollar drop in retail price will put the Elite at $449, while the Premium will be $349 and the Core will be $279.

The price changes come on the eve of Madden 08's release the following week, a game that Microsoft is hoping will shift a lot of PS2 owners over to the company's consumer base, gamers who have not yet made the switch to PS3. Microsoft's group product manager said the price move was planned long before E3, despite Microsoft's repeated denial of any such plans over the past couple months.

The company also took the opportunity to add that the 360 has kept it's launch price for 21 months straight while maintaining its sales lead, the longest any console has held its original price so far. Microsoft says this supports the idea that its console is the best value for gamers. Sounds like a pretty good theory to me, or maybe gamers just like knowing they can get a free replacement under warranty any time their console breaks.
