apanese gamers and importers anxiously waiting to learn the significance of that glorious fruit in the Dragon Quest IX logo are in for a major patience test. Square Enix has just announced that the highly anticipated DS game will not be meeting its originally planned 2007 release date. An unknown 2008 release has been quoted instead, due to the need for further quality improvements.
Dragon Quest IX Hoshizora no Mamoribito (literally: Dragon Quest IX Defenders of the Starry Sky) was previewed earlier this year as featuring an Action-RPG battle system, until Japanese fans went into an outrage over the sharp change from the classic first-person battle view, forcing the developer Level 5 to change it back.
It's possible this issue contributed to development delays, or maybe they're just having difficulty cramming such an enormous game onto a cartridge. The exact reason will have to be left to speculation. In the meantime, fans of the series can be content with the remakes of DQIV, V and VI, which are currently still on schedule.
