Film execs cry over poor sales, blame Halo 3

any film executives are feeling sour over lousy movie ticket sales for the early half of October. After weeks of lackluster movie offerings, it apparently has come as a surprise that the first weekend of October scored the lowest sales weekend the film industry has seen for that month since 1999, selling only $80 million in ticket sales. By comparison, Halo 3 raked in $170 million in sales in its first day, and went on to soar past $300 million not long after.
Naturally, film execs and analysts were quick to blame the popular game, such as Mike Hickey who says:
| |
"The audience on this game is the 18-to-34 demographic, similar to what you'd see in cinemas, this could last for several weeks."
|
Especially feeling the burn over flat movie sales are the creators of The Heartbreak Kid, who dropped roughly $60 million on the film's budget, and saw an opening weekend of only $14 million.
It's safe to believe Halo 3 stole some thunder from the film industry during it's crazy release week, but the extent of damage being implied sounds like an all too easy scapegoat to cover up the fact some execs blew a huge budget on big-name actors for yet another date movie with no substance.
A little advice Hollywood—consumers' money will go to the highest quality form of entertainment. Give us something with a little, you know, content, and you might see some people return to your currently empty cinemas.
