he Discovery Channel has announced a series of five 60-minute episodes detailing the history of video games. It will explore gaming progression from the 70s to present day, showing how games are created, how the industry has changed through the years, and the impact it has had on gamers. The short series is scheduled to air on Wednesdays beginning November 21 at 8 PM (ET/PT).
Early episodes will take a look at the rough start for the industry, slowly shifting to hero-driven themes and the birth of mascot characters. It will then follow the growth from 2D to 3D and the newfound attention from critics, as gaming realism brought about deeper and more realistic interaction. Final episodes will focus on developers' ability to create emotional characters accompanied by deep stories. Games used as learning tools and creative expression will also be explored.
Throughout the series, influential names in the industry will be interviewed, such as Ralph Baer, David Jaffe, Will Wright, and Peter Molyneux. If past Discovery Channel documentary series are anything to go by, expect some pretty extensive and educational history.
