iji Aonuma, director for much of the latter Zelda series, exchanged some words with UK's Official Nintendo Magazine. He talks about challenges faced when beginning his lengthy work on the Zelda series, and how they influence decisions in each new title. He also comments suggestively about what series installment he'd most like to see in 3D.

Ocarina of Time was the first title I worked on, and I was continuously tackling challenges every day during its development, so I think this is the title I feel I impacted the most. I believe that experience made me what I am now. I always think about what we couldn’t do and what didn’t work well in the previous game when we start a new title, but there’s no game that I would want to actually change as such. I have to say though, the first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I’m actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game.

It's an interesting idea, but how would it be received by fans? A Link to the Past was one of the highest quality examples of 2D gaming done right, an instant classic. I could imagine it in 3D via fixed-angle environments, perhaps on the DS. In any case, regardless of exactly what Aonuma has in mind, the idea remains nothing more than a casual comment for the time being. But hey, he's very interested.
