This is a sponsored feature for the dark fantasy film "9", which hits Blu-ray and DVD on December 29. High quality CG animation and very bizarre characters bring the world of 9 to life. I decided to share 9 of my favorite CG artists who are also known for the quality of their work as well as some very bizarre characters.
Bobby Chiu has been on my favorites list ever since I first came across his work. Even if you're not a huge art fanatic, it's hard not to love his creations. In particular, his series of animal creatures with exaggerated features often based partially on real animals - or a mixture of several animals - always make me laugh. The lighthearted nature of his art seems like a reflection of the freedom he experiences through his work, a freedom that feels in his own words "like I've already retired".
I originally came across Till's work by accident when I saw his "Can't smile without you" piece depicting a bloated cat pawing at an equally bloated blowfish. Just as the title implied, it made me smile. I had to make a desktop wallpaper out of it right away. His work has featured in numerous books, animations, and festivals, and he's proficient in a number of creative areas, but whenever I think of him I'll always think of "the image with the fat cat and the fat fish".
I've always enjoyed any type of caricatures, but when you mix them with a Pixar-like style, it's instant win. Tiago's work is a good example of that mix, and has a level of detail that surpasses a lot of the CG stuff I see. While I can't read Portuguese, that doesn't stop me from enjoying the great work on his website.
I came across Jose's "Le Rabbit" on a page in the Exotique 5 art book and just had to check out more of his work. Afterall, it's not every day you see a smug rabbit smoking. A couple of his other works have also appeared in a variety of CG art books.
Anton's website unfortunately seems to have expired, but I wanted to include him in my list anyway because he makes some great CG animals. They remind me of something out of the Over the Hedge CGI animation, only a bit more exotic.
