GAME DESIGN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
Schools on this page offer video game design degrees or training programs that are related to job requirements for video game designers, game artists, and game programmers. Some programs are designed exclusively with video game development in mind and some are not. All that matters in the end is whether you are receiving the credentials for the area of work you are pursuing. Always be sure to contact the school for clear and accurate information about the current status of their programs. This list is far from complete and should at best serve as a starting point. Schools are listed only for information purposes, not as a recommendation. You are encouraged to search reviews from students or graduates online. StudentsReview might be a good place to begin. Additionally, it is a good idea to consider the following—
Campus or Online?
Campus classes and online classes both have their strengths and weaknesses. The greatest advantage to campus training is arguably the presence of a professor to direct questions to for an immediate response. The campus experience also provides valuable group interaction and often grants you better access to technology and resources used in the courses. Online classes by comparison have the obvious advantage of convenience, allowing you to work from wherever you choose and on your own schedule. Online training is often more affordable as well. However, it lacks the physical advantages of a campus experience and correspondence with a professor is usually via email. Schools claim to offer the same educational credentials on campus or online, so the choice is a question of what suits your individual needs. Also keep in mind that while most online degrees can be completed entirely online, some schools do mix online and campus classes, so always check with the school directly for full details.
Accreditation
Accredited schools are institutions that have proven to a nationally recognized accrediting agency that they meet acceptable levels of quality. There are many non-accredited schools with high standards in quality, just as there are also accredited schools with poor standards, so you should judge an institution's reputation on its own merits, but also keep in mind that accredited schools allow you to transfer credits between schools and make it easier to obtain financial aid. If accreditation is important to you, be sure to search the school you are considering on the U.S. Department of Education database of accredited schools.
