New Player Tips

Use your map − Familiarize yourself with your starting city and how to use it. Use markers to pinpoint important places. When you play for the first time, open up your map in your main menu (or just type /map in chat mode) and make note of important places such as the Auction House and town gates.
Get signet cast − And do this every time you leave through your town gate. Talk to a guard near the gate exit to receive signet. This allows you to take part in your nations conquest campaign, but most importantly for you it allows you to receive crystals. Crystals, which represent the element of the monsters you fight, so bees drop wind crystals, crawlers drop earth crystals, etc. With this in mind, stacks of crystals can be sold early on in your first few hours to give you vital starting cash.
Stack your items − This is more important than it sounds, with only 30 starting inventory spaces, you will need all the space you can get. This is also vital for maximum profit at the Auction House. Identical items can be grouped into stacks of 12. This can be done from your items menu by pressing on PS2, + on PC, or Y on Xbox 360, and then selecting "auto" to organise your items.
Find some friends − Having a good circle of friends to play through the game with makes it all the more enjoyable. Higher level experienced players will be able to help you with important parts of the game as well as provide useful information. The best way to go about finding these sorts of friendly, helpful people is to join a linkshell.
Use /shutdown − When pressed for time the /shutdown feature is very helpful. It will log you out, close POL and return PC users to Windows, rather than having to cancel several screens to end the game. Its use on the PS2 is even more obvious; it will not only log you out, but put your machine on standby. Remember that logging out in your Mog House is instant.
Be careful of aggro − Certain monsters will attack you regardless of whether you start the fight or not, these are known as aggroable monsters. Early ones to watch out for are Yagudos near Windurst, Quadavs near Bastok, and Orcs near San d'Oria. Goblins can also aggro and appear in all three starting areas. Make sure that you are particulary careful around these especially when you need to rest. Certain monsters of the same type such as crawlers will link together and fight in numbers when you engage one.
Watch the time − Vana'diel experiences night and day. When levelling up be particularly careful during the hours of 22:00 through 4:00 game time, as it is during these times that undead monsters start to prowl. They too can aggro, and furthermore, if your health is low (yellow or red) it will alert undead from an even greater distance.
Use chat shortcuts − Did you know that you can use Ctrl+R to reply to tells from other players more quickly? Also use Ctrl+S to talk in say, Ctrl+L to talk on your linkshell, and Ctrl+P for party chat.

Taking Screenshots

Screenshots are a fun way of saving your adventures. You know the picture has been taken correctly, when you hear the click.

PC Version: Press your scroll lock key to clear the screen and then press the print screen key to take the shot. On a compact keyboard, laptop users may need to use a function key to get screenshots to work correctly. This works in a similar way to the alt key and allows you to use the other function on your small laptop keyboard. This may help if your scroll lock or print screen key doesn't seem to work immediately.

Your screenshots can then be accessed on your computer by first going to Program Files > PlayOnline > SquareEnix > PlayOnlineViewer. Then simply find the correct folder. The full location should look something like this:

Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\pub\home01\open\ScreenShots

PS2 Version: Press the Select button to clear the screen, then hold R2 and hit R1 to take the shot.

To view your screenshots, from POL Navigator go to your file manager where you can select up to 10 pictures at once and send them to yourself via another non-POL e-mail. The file manager will show you a list of all your pictures, and if you place a star next to them they can be attached to your message, and then you can send the e-mail as normal.

Xbox 360 Version: Press the Back button to clear the screen, then hold down the right trigger (RT) and hit the right bumper (RB) to take the shot.

Macros

Macros are handy shortcuts that exist to make your life easier. Use macros to increase your efficiency in party situations, by being a quicker and more flexible member, here are some simple macros you can use remember to use correct spelling and capitalisation for all of the information or the macros will not work correctly. Replace the name examples used with the ones you need.

/magic "Stone" <t>A simple offensive magic macro.
/magic "Blaze Spikes" <me>Use <me> to select yourself as the target.
/magic "Cure" <st>After using this macro in a party, a blue selector will appear, use the F1-F6 keys to move it between party members and select your target.
/magic "Cure" <p0>A healing macro for a specific party member. <p0> is you, <p1> is the second member, <p2> is the third, and so on.
/recast "Fire"Using this will bring up a timer informing you of the time left until you can use the spell again.
/recast works with both spells and job abilities.
/ja "Provoke" <t>Uses a job ability on the target.
/ja "Berserk" <me>Uses a job ability on yourself.
/ws "Gust Slash" <t>Uses a weapon skill on the target.
/p My TP is at <tp>Informs your party members of your current TP.
/wait 1Use this when you want to put a slight gap in a macro with multiple commands, such as a job ability followed by a weapon skill. The macro will wait to process your command depending on the number of seconds entered. (1-60)
/equip ring1 "Courage Ring"Use this to make an equipment change, very useful if you have a certain piece of armour that will improve the performance of a job ability or spell. Replace the underlined section with the equip slot of your choosing (eg. ring1, ring2, hands, neck, sub, ammo, main, etc)

Backing Up Macros & Settings (PC)

While your FFXI character is saved remotely on the server, a number of things (including your game settings, control buttons and macros) are saved directly onto your hard drive. Backing them up can be very useful, particularly if you plan on re-installing the game, or moving to another system.

Firstly you need to find the directory that Final Fantasy XI is installed in. It will be something like:  C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\

Once there, proceed through until you reach the main FINAL FANTASY XI folder, this is the one you want. There are a number of confusing folders and files in this directory, do not touch any but the one you need:  /USER. Inside this folder, you should find a number of other folders with 6 digit numerical and alphabetical names, such as: a2b5a2

Each folder relates to each one of your characters, simply copy the files and paste them to your required location. Game settings are now protected.

Patching The Game

Patching is the process of updating the existing game to include bug fixes and updates to the game. Upon buying a new copy of FFXI with both the new expansions included, you may not have to worry about patching for too long. But do get used to the idea of having to patch the game regularly.

Occasionally the game will require maintenance and once your server comes back up, you may be required to download updates. PlayOnline will usually give you an indication of how long the download will take on your particular connection.

Sub Jobs

At level 18 you meet the requirements for being able to quest for your sub job, or secondary job. A sub job allows you to customize your character further by having a second job to serve as a backup to your main job. Your sub job level can be a maximum of half your main jobs level. For example, a 75 White Mage can have Black Mage subbed to the level of 37, WHM75/BLM37.

If you're torn between two job classes, just remember that sub jobs later on in the game will allow you to play two jobs at the same time, allowing you to choose jobs which will compliment another of your choices.

You can change your job at any time via your Mog House. Additionally, levels gained in all jobs are saved. Don't worry if the job you start with isn't the one you stick with, enjoy yourself and experiment. Remember though, that you cannot change your characters appearance once it has been made, save for your clothes and armor.

Walking Directions to Major Cities

You won't have access to chocobo rental until Lv.20, so you'll have to do alot of travelling on foot until then. Buy the basic maps from a dealer in town before heading out. Here's some directions to get you to the important cities, all work in reverse.
